CHOUFFE begins in the late 1970s when two brothers-in-law, Pierre Gobron and Chris Bauweraerts, decided to create their own beer, in their own brewery in Belgium. Using the little money they had at the time, they embarked upon what fans of the brewery call a “Chouffe story”.
The Achouffe brewery is located in an area referred to as “the Valley of the Fairies”. When you are in the Valley of the Fairies, you are surrounded by stunning scenery and a magical atmosphere. This is where the CHOUFFE gnomes originate from, before they started exploring the world.
The first LA CHOUFFE mash tub (49 litres) was produced on 27 August 1982.
The Achouffe dwarves soon wanted to explore other lands, and their Dutch cousins were the first to offer them a warm welcome. Today, Achouffe beers are supplied to over 40 countries across the world.
They have also won highly coveted international awards, year after year, in recognition of their unique flavour.
CHOUFFE uses these fun brand associations to make the beers very accessible and approachable for everyone. This is also reflected in the beers themselves which are usually very easily drinkable while still maintaining a fairly high ABV level. This is summarized in the motto “Funny outside, serious inside”.
In the late summer of 2006, the brewery’s founders opted to entrust the fate of their beloved dwarves to the Duvel-Moortgat Brewery. Since then, a great deal of work has been undertaken, and the beers have found new destinations across the globe.
